Local area

The Acorn sits in a great position just a mile or so from the famous Goodwood House Estate, which sits among the rolling hills of the South Downs and offers an exciting calendar of events including the Festival of Speed, Goodwood Revival and Glorious Goodwood (Qatar Festival).

Petite and cosmopolitan, the ancient city of Chichester is a couple of miles away, draped in history including the majestic cathedral and the fantastically preserved Roman walls. A myriad of listed buildings line the four main streets that converge at the Cross, with many excellent independent stores ranging from boutique clothing and beauty salons to cafes and coffee houses, along with a wide range of pubs, restaurants and high street shops. A wide range of large supermarkets can be found in and around Chichester.

Chichester is a cultural treasure trove, with the renowned Festival Theatre just north of the centre offering a variety of first-class productions, and several art galleries and museums including the fine Pallant House Gallery. Fishbourne Roman Palace is a short drive, and combined with a walk around the city walls it brings this fascinating period of British history to life. To the south, the beautiful Sussex coastline reveals the famous sandy beach of West Wittering (book parking well in advance as it gets very busy in the summer), along with Pagham, Bosham and Chichester Harbours. Pagham Harbour Nature Reserve and Chichester Harbour a little further to the west are both areas of outstanding natural beauty, and a haven for unusual birds, wildlife and nature conservation, along with sailing centres at Itchenor and Bosham.

Eight miles east, the historic market town of Arundel is well worth a trip to stroll the riverbank and see the iconic castle and the cathedral. Along with Goodwood Racecourse, Fontwell Park is only a couple of miles away – a unique figure of eight track and a jewel of West Sussex horse racing.

There are some lovely countryside walks from the door; try the 2.5 mile hilltop stretch up to the iconic Sussex landmark of Halnaker Windmill. For a shorter stroll with the reward of good food, head to Farmer Butcher Chef Restaurant half a mile from your door. 5 miles east, you can also access the South Downs at the 1400-hectare Slindon Estate, owned by the National Trust and incorporating Stane Street – the Roman road linking London with Chichester, which offers a particularly picturesque walk through the woods from Eartham to the top of the South Downs at Bignor, where it meets the South Downs Way.
