Local area
Gay Street is a tiny hamlet, yet is proud to be the home to no less than three acclaimed vineyards and Wine Estates. Nutbourne, Nyetimber and Ambriel Sparkling are all within walking distance (ticketed open days only at Nyetimber), and there are no less than 10 vineyards within 10 miles at last count. This is the heart of West Sussex wine country and a mecca for connoisseurs. Beer and ale enthusiasts are also well catered for, with the excellent Hepworth and Greyhound Breweries both within 3 miles and producing a wide range of very good Sussex IPAs, ales and beers including gluten-free and vegan options. There are 2 good country pubs about a 20-minute walk across the fields; The Rising Sun in Nutbourne and the Queens Head in West Chiltington. For food supplies, the wonderful Dyke Farm Shop is a mile away, or take a stroll 5 minutes up the road to Crowell’s for their ‘cracking’ eggs. There is also a large Sainsbury’s and Tesco at Pulborough. Venturing a little further afield there are an abundance of places to visit; Petworth House and Park, Parham House, RSPB Pulborough Brooks, Amberley Village, castle and working museum, Arundel and Knepp Castle are all within a 15-minute drive. And of course the beautiful South Downs and River Arun sit just the other side of Pulborough, ready for a lifetime of exploration.
