Description
Telegraph House is one in a line of Admiralty semaphore stations, built in the early 1800s to serve as a communication link between London and Portsmouth. Standing as one of the few remaining sites and following a premium renovation, it is reopening its doors as a totally unique home stay in Sussex. A decadently relaxing rural retreat for extended families and responsible, discerning groups.
Through the grand entrance hall and into the heart of the house, the elegant drawing room is spacious and bright, with high ceilings and a refined, co-ordinated colour palette. An intimate ambiance is created by a corral of deep sofas gathered around the wood burning stove, with a large Smart TV providing additional entertainment for cosy nights in. Two open side rooms provide additional spaces for convivial catch-ups over matters of great importance, and perhaps a glass of something special. One of these rooms ‘The Study’ also offers a corner sofa that converts into a very comfortable small double bed. A full-length curtain can be drawn to screen the Study from the drawing room, making a private mini bedroom.
Doors from both the drawing room and hall lead into the large kitchen-dining room, well equipped with a full set of appliances. It is a fun, open plan space for cooking an informal dinner together, or dress the large table to the nines for a fine dining experience to celebrate a big birthday or occasion. See the House info section for a full list of kitchen facilities.
The ground floor presents three of the four king-size bedrooms; a large master bedroom with en-suite shower room, a chic light blue room and a relaxing sage room with fantastic views over the gardens and fields. A family bathroom with shower over bath, plus a separate WC complete the ground floor. Upstairs, the first floor features an exclusive master bedroom with en-suite bathroom, and a window seat revealing wonderful long-range views over Sussex, Hampshire, the coastline and all the way to the Isle of Wight on a clear day.
Outside this large holiday home in Sussex, the fantastic range of outdoor recreation starts from the kitchen door, where a large villa-style terrace hosts an outside dining area with huge chiminea-style brick BBQ. There are extensive, beautiful gardens with large lawns, mature trees, secluded corners and romantic spots to admire the panoramic views over the South Downs. Beyond the patio and gardens, the jewel in the crown is the swimming pool area and lawn tennis court beyond. The pool is open and heated from 1st June to 30th September.

Local area
Telegraph House is situated in the heart of the South Downs National Park, with bridleways and footpaths on the doorstep and surrounded by charming hamlets and villages. Compton is a traditional Sussex village centred around a small square, with a lovely shop and tea rooms. It is situated just a couple of miles from the village of South Harting where there is direct access to the South Downs Way.There are some great pubs to sample nearby with highly rated food also on offer. A little further up the road from Compton is the traditional country pub the Victoria Inn at West Marden, The White Horse at Chilgrove and The Hare & Hounds at Stoughton. A wide selection of large supermarkets and other stores can be found in Chichester and Havant.
The wonderful National Trust property Uppark House & Gardens can be seen from the house, and is a 5 minute drive from Compton. There are gorgeous Georgian interiors and rare dolls' houses from the 18th century to view inside; explore further and discover the network of servants’ tunnels beneath the house. The Uppark Gardens were designed by Capability Brown and there is something to see every season, including the scented garden in the Summer and the Norway Maples in the Autumn.
The picturesque town of Petersfield is just 9 miles away; this ancient market town was originally built as a Norman 'new town' at the end of the 11th Century. The main square provides an attractive focal point providing the perfect venue for the traditional market every Saturday and Wednesday. At its centre stands the magnificent equestrian statue of King William III. The Church of St. Peter dates back to 1120AD and retains many original features. The town has a vibrant musical and artistic scene as well as many restaurants, cafes and bars to frequent. Within a 20 minute drive you can reach the Queen Elizabeth Country Park, the largest park in the South Downs with 600 hectares of dramatic downland and beautiful woodland. There are fantastic views to the coast and Meon Valley from the South Downs Way at the peak of Butser Hill, the highest point in Hampshire and home to Butser Ancient Farm.

It is a cosmopolitan, vibrant and friendly city proudly combining two thousand years of heritage with a lively lifestyle, headed by the towering presence of the cathedral. Chichester Festival Theatre is well worth a visit; famous for its quality of theatre production, many of which premiere here before moving on to the London theatre scene. For some classically British pastimes, the famous Goodwood Estate offers a range of activities including a championship golf course, the motor circuit, racecourse and aerodrome, with particular mention of course to the Festival of Speed, the Goodwood Revival and Glorious Goodwood.
For days out, for a beach trip look no further than West Wittering’s famous blue flag sands (it gets very busy in summer!). A little further afield and Portsmouth is famous as the home of HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and also in more recent years the Mary Rose. The historic dockyard sits right next to Gunwharf Quays shopping mall, and the Spinnaker Tower which offer spectacular views over Portsmouth and the Solent.
