Nestled between the mighty Ditchling Beacon and the charming village half a mile away, this spacious annexe cottage sits in a pretty downland area surrounded by countryside and rural homesteads.

Arriving in the large open living space, a huge corner sofa sits to one side. It is a welcoming sight after a day walking the South Downs, for cosy nights reading a book or watching a series on the large Smart TV. The dining area sits conveniently next to the smart kitchen that looks out over the garden, well-equipped for a super self-catering stay. To the far side of the sitting room is a bright bathroom, offering a large shower for an invigorating start to the day. Upstairs you will find the large bedroom with a king size bed, desk and a wide selection of books. The Velux windows offer fantastic views of Ditchling Beacon and the South Downs ridge, all the way to Devil’s Dyke and beyond.

A side door next to the shower room opens onto the owners’ lovely large green garden, where an area outside the cottage is kept reserved for your use. You are invited to enjoy the rest of the garden also; hidden away at the top there may even be an egg or two waiting for breakfast in the chicken coop!

With a secure gated entrance and being tucked to the side of the owners’ own home, the owners are never too far away on the phone should you need assistance during your stay. Beacon Cottage is a fine holiday home for couples and solo travellers, set in a quiet and secluded spot from which to discover the natural and historic landmarks of the area. Useful information and house rules

  • Pets: not allowed.
  • Please contact us if you are interested in a stay of over 28 nights (a short-term let).
  • Accessibility: one low step (3cm) over the front door threshold. Shower enclosure has a 10cm step. Winder staircase (with bannister and standard height risers) to the first floor, opening directly into the room at the top. One step (15cm) down from rear door into the garden, with 3 steps (10cm) up to the lawn area. Other internal floors are even and level, with no internal steps. This is intended as a guide only and accuracy is not guaranteed, please contact us if you need more info. Measurements are approx.
  • Kitchen facilities: single electric fan oven, 4 ring electric hob, tall fridge-freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, kettle, toaster, cafetière.
  • Iron, ironing board, clothes airer, hairdryer provided. Charcoal BBQ on request.
  • There is an unfenced pond in the rear garden, please keep children supervised at all times.
  • The owners live in the main house annexed to the cottage, who are available on the phone (or occasionally in person) should you need anything. There is no access between the two properties during your stay. Beacon Cottage has its own private entrance and will be exclusively yours.
  • CCTV covers the outside areas for security purposes. There is no CCTV inside the property itself.
  • One infant up to age 2 is welcome in addition to the total guest capacity of this property. Please bring your own travel cot, bedding and highchair etc.
  • Free secure gated parking on the driveway in front of the property, with space for 2 cars.

Local area

With two popular pubs and a church dating back to the 12th Century, Ditchling is a bustling and picturesque village that predates the Domesday Book by several centuries. It has retained its chocolate box charm with many examples of Tudor buildings, and small shops and tea rooms including the lovely Nutmeg Tree fit perfectly into these traditional English surroundings. There is a local shop and farm shop in the village, and large supermarkets in Burgess Hill and Brighton.

Ditchling Beacon is a major landmark of the Downs; try a challenging walk to the top to join the South Downs Way, and head east towards Lewes or west to Devil’s Dyke and Truleigh Hill. Either direction offers stunning panoramic views across Sussex, with the coast to the south and the vast plain of the Sussex Weald AONB to the north. Reward your efforts with a picnic along the way, or a locally sourced Sunday lunch back down in the village. A rich, wholesome experience not to be missed.

Head south over the Beacon, and the Downs gradually descend to the coast and the vibrant, cosmopolitan city of Brighton. An enjoyable day can be spent wandering its huge variety of shops and arts, the iconic Royal Pavilion, and the i360 serving fantastic views over this eclectic city and beyond. Two miles east of Ditchling, Plumpton College is home to a small but award-winning vineyard, and Plumpton Racecourse is also just up the road for horseracing and equestrian events (Hickstead is also a short drive for international showjumping). Five miles further on, head to Lewes to spend some time wandering the castle and pretty centre of this historic market town, famous for its bonfire celebrations. For those with a love of the arts you simply cannot miss the unique experience of Glyndebourne Opera, book (very) early as its long summer season of operatic events sells out fast!



Delightful stay in beautiful situation

We were met by the friendly and welcoming owners who showed us around the cottage which is attached to their house. The cottage is well equipped and most comfortable. We had full access to the large garden which is the owners passion. The location is a 20 min walk between the Ditchling Beacon and the Ditchling village and surrounded by good footpaths. Brighton is only a short drive away as is the train station at Hassocks. All in all making this cottage very well located, very comfortable - particularly the large double bed - and run by delightful friendly owners respectful of our privacy.
