Description

A few steps from the medieval village square in the centre of Alfriston, Bell Cottage is an attractive terraced home sympathetically styled using contemporary furnishings and stripped floorboards.

Its cosy sitting room is decorated in warm tones, with an ornamental fireplace and old brick hearth, comfortable seating and time-worn antique wooden furniture setting a calm ambience. There is a Smart TV (no aerial) and a selection of books to enjoy while you put your feet up after a day walking the South Downs Way, accessible just a few moments from the door. The kitchen-dining room features a full range of modern self-catering conveniences, and is centred around the breakfast bar and traditional farmhouse table.

Upstairs, the first floor presents a large master bedroom with a king size bed, the west-facing windows catching the afternoon sun and overlooking the street below. The second bedroom offers a double bed, wardrobe and a gorgeous little writing desk. Both beds are draped in hypoallergenic wool duvets and quality linen for a snug and comfortable slumber. The family bathroom is also upstairs, with a shower over the bath. A practical layout for a short break to East Sussex, or a longer rental between house moves and short-term work placements in the area.

Outside, the pretty cottage garden is fully enclosed to keep the kids and pup safe and secure. From the rear gate you can take the twitten straight to the centre of Alfriston, a path back in time. A short stroll further brings you onto the South Downs Way, the River Cuckmere and the village tye where the magnificent 14th Century church proudly stands.

Bell Cottage offers ideal accommodation if you are looking for a traditional holiday cottage in Alfriston, or a short term let near Lewes, Newhaven or Eastbourne. Local area

The beautifully preserved old English village of Alfriston was noted in the Domesday Book in 1086. Strolling along the ancient streets, edged with charming crooked buildings, is a romantic step into a bygone era. Surrounded by the South Downs, visitors can enjoy the famous Alfriston Parish Church of St Andrew (known as the Cathedral of the South Downs), the award-winning independent bookshop Much Ado Books, and Alfriston Clergy House – the very first building bought by the National Trust – which offers delightful gardens and lovely views. The village hosts events throughout the year including the Alfriston Festival, music festival and farmers markets. A local shop is 200m away, with larger supermarkets at Seaford, Lewes and Eastbourne. There is a wonderful choice of pubs, cafes and quaint tea rooms with plenty of variety of drinks and meals to enjoy during your stay.

The South Downs Way passes right through Alfriston, offering a myriad of walks and cycle paths to explore. The Downs meets the sea at this eastern end of the National Park and it really is a most picturesque area, in particular the contrasting landscapes of the rolling downlands and open views at Cuckmere Haven, and the chalk cliffs of Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters. The chalk grasslands of the Crowlink walk make for a wonderfully romantic route to access the cliff tops. The River Cuckmere also passes right by the village and is just a short walk from the house. For watersports lovers there is a wide range of activities including paddleboarding that can be enjoyed, all the way down from the village to the sea along the beautiful meandering river valley. Equipment hire can be booked at the centres in Exceat.

Close by are Charleston Farmhouse and gardens, the award-winning Drusillas Zoo and Park a mile away, Glyndebourne Opera, Firle Place, Pevensey Castle, the pebble beaches at Seaford, the Long Man of Wilmington, and Airbourne and international tennis at Eastbourne. Lewes is also only 10 miles away, steeped in history and heritage with a thriving cultural scene including the Lewes Bonfire celebrations in early November. A stay in this traditional holiday cottage during November and December will get you in the mood for a Dickensian Christmas.

The cottage was really peaceful

Lovely comfortable beds & reliable WIFI for WFH. We have dust allergies and were not affected staying here as no carpets etc. My wife has mobility issues but stairs nice & wide so no problems using them. Good pub nearby (Smugglers) with large & partially covered beer garden but the garden @the cottage was really peaceful to sit in. Alfriston is a very friendly place.
