Description

A pretty holiday home with charming walled flower garden, set amongst farmland and countryside in the joyously named hamlet of Gay Street. A wonderful rural retreat for couples in the heart of Sussex wine country, close to Petworth, Pulborough and a wealth of famous Sussex landmarks.

French doors open into the bright sitting room, with a sofa facing out towards the garden to fully appreciate the surroundings. A large skylight sits above the doors to cast ample natural light into this pretty self-catering home, and for stargazing away from the bright skies of the city. To one side is the bedroom offering a king size bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers and bookshelves, and to the other side a bathroom with shower over bath. Set off the sitting room is a dining area with the same attractive views of the garden, and the well-equipped kitchen ready to prepare a cosy dinner for two. See the ‘House info’ section for more details about this country cottage for couples and solo travellers in the South Downs, near Pulborough.

As its name suggests, books adorn this cottage with a wide selection of literature. Pull any one from the shelf, grab a cup or glass and relax in the wonderful cottage garden. With a flower and delicate fragrance for all seasons, it is an excellent muse and inspiration for artistry, tapestry and scribing. Beyond your private garden there is also welcome access to over an acre of the owners’ own beautiful grounds. Tucked away in a quiet spot a few steps away, a carefully and naturally nurtured large pond sits under dappled sunlight, yours to enjoy for picnics, reading, painting and dozing. Or simply to enjoy a bottle of fine, chilled wine from one of the many local vineyards following a day trip to Parham House, Petworth or RSPB Pulborough Brooks – all just a few minutes up the road.

Local area

Gay Street is a tiny hamlet, yet is proud to be the home to no less than three acclaimed vineyards and Wine Estates. Nutbourne, Nyetimber and Ambriel Sparkling are all within walking distance (ticketed open days only at Nyetimber), and there are no less than 10 vineyards within 10 miles at last count. This is the heart of West Sussex wine country and a mecca for connoisseurs. Beer and ale enthusiasts are also well catered for, with the excellent Hepworth and Greyhound Breweries both within 3 miles and producing a wide range of very good Sussex IPAs, ales and beers including gluten-free and vegan options.

There are 2 good country pubs about a 20-minute walk across the fields; The Rising Sun in Nutbourne and the Queens Head in West Chiltington. For food supplies, the wonderful Dyke Farm Shop is a mile away, or take a stroll 5 minutes up the road to Crowell’s for their ‘cracking’ eggs. There is also a large Sainsbury’s and Tesco at Pulborough. Venturing a little further afield there are an abundance of places to visit; Petworth House and Park, Parham House, RSPB Pulborough Brooks, Amberley Village, castle and working museum, Arundel and Knepp Castle are all within a 15-minute drive. And of course the beautiful South Downs and River Arun sit just the other side of Pulborough, ready for a lifetime of exploration.

Relaxation time

Just want you need on holiday. A relaxing cottage to sit on the sofa and enjoy looking out onto the wonderful garden. The bed was very comfortable and warm. It was great to have such a vast collection of books to explore. Hosts Chris and Liz were very welcoming and were interested in making sure we had eveything we wanted during our stay. The tv is small but we never used it. No need to watch tv when you have books and a garden to enjoy. We visited a pub about 4 miles away which was lovely and worth a visit.

Perfectly relaxing retreat.

We had the most delightful long weekend at Library Cottage it was everything we hoped for from the website description, a secluded little retreat surrounded by it's own beautiful garden. The cottage is spacious, light and such a relaxing space to spend a few days we were able to switch off completely from work and city life. On the practical side, we had everything we needed in the kitchen and the bed was cosy and very comfy. Liz and Chris were friendly and welcoming hosts and we definitely hope to return to Library Cottage in the future.

A beautiful stay in a lovely part of Sussex

Library cottage is a delightful and homely place to stay. It has it's own stunning garden and the lovely hosts, Chris and Liz take rightful pride in the rest of their gardens and were more than happy for us to share them. We could happily have stayed there all day relaxing. However, the area has so much to offer, museums both indoor and out, gardens, historic houses, beautiful villages and the coast is nearby too. Facilities are great in the cottage. Everything you need is on hand. We are already planning a return visit.
